Braces Tips from an Orthodontist Near Oklahoma City

Posted on: April 16, 2018

When meeting with an orthodontist near Oklahoma City, it is important to ask questions about what life is like after braces. Our goal is to ensure that a patient's treatment plan goes as smoothly as possible. This involves providing a great deal of educational material and tips for the best ways to prevent dental damage or damage to braces during orthodontic treatment.

Keeping that in mind, here are some do's and don'ts to follow while wearing aligners or braces.

What to do when wearing aligners

When wearing aligners, remember to:

  • Take them out prior to drinking any hot liquids since they can change the shape of the aligners
  • Take them out when eating to ensure that they do not change shape due to the force of pressure applied from chewing
  • Store them in a plastic carrying case so they do not get thrown away or broken
  • Wear them for at least 20 hours per day, preferably 22
  • Wear the aligners in a series as prescribed by the orthodontist near Oklahoma City
  • Keep all scheduled orthodontic appointments

What not to do when wearing aligners

When you are wearing aligners, do not:

  • Forget to put them in
  • Eat while wearing them
  • Forget to brush teeth

What to do when wearing traditional or ceramic braces

When you are wearing traditional or ceramic braces, remember to:

  • Brush teeth after every meal
  • Floss daily
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Keep all scheduled orthodontic appointments
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Carry a dental pic that can remove food that has become lodged in between the brackets and wires

What not to do when wearing traditional or ceramic braces

When you are wearing traditional or ceramic braces, do not:

  • Eat hard or crunchy foods like raw carrots, nuts or hard candies
  • Eat food that is acidic, natural or otherwise
  • Skip brushing teeth
  • Drink soda or high sugar juice
  • Play or practice sports without wearing a mouth guard since this can lead to a serious mouth injury like cut gums and lips if something were to collide with the face
  • Be afraid to smile – you look much better than you realize

Things to remember

Regardless of whether a person is straightening teeth with aligners or traditional braces, it is critical to keep all scheduled orthodontic appointments. It is also crucial to continue seeing a dentist twice per year. These appointments are necessary for ensuring that the treatment plan remains on schedule and to avoid problems like dental damage, tooth decay or damaged braces.

Our goal is to help our patients have a smooth treatment process so we will continue to remind patients of these tips on a regular basis. We also want patients to remember that even if the treatment and various restrictions feel difficult, they are only for a short while. Most patients only wear braces for two years or less. While it may seem like a long time, this is less time than people spend in high school or college. It goes faster than you think – trust us.
